The largest urban natural park in the world…

At the heart of the city, the jungle has reasserted itself. Among the 1620 vegetal species that the park counts, you’ll get a climpse of the yellow « ipê-tabaco”, the “murici” from the Nordeste, the “pau-pereira” from which people extract tea. You’ll see free-roaming animals such as monkeys, armadillos and multiple bird species. This natural park is composed of three distinct parts: the “Serra Carioca” is the most coveted by tourists because you can see the statue of Christ the Redeemer and the watchtowers “Dona Marta” and “Vista Chinesa”. Another part contains the Tijuca Forest: it’s the wildest area with steep paths leading to waterfalls and to the Tijuca and Papagaio peaks. Eventually, the part along the coast offers two paths leading to breathtaking views: one goes to Pedra Bonita (easy hike) and the other reaches Pedra de Gavea (difficult hike). It’s also from there that you can go paragliding or hang-gliding.
